I am just another wannabe opera singer. I am in my late 20’s, and I have a BA in Music Education and a Teaching Credential to my credit. I am a year into my Master’s Degree, with at least three semesters left, and I’m trying to decide if I want to get a DMA after I’m done. I was just hired as an adjunct at a local junior college, which is pretty awesome. I’ve been teaching voice lessons for them for thee semesters already, but now I’m going to be teaching an actual class. (It’s weird the way they have voice lessons set up – voice teachers at this school aren’t actually employed by the school, the students pay us directly.)
I’m a soprano… probably lyric. We’ll see. I’ve got a fairly light voice. I was told once that I sounded somewhat like Barbara Bonney. One of my students recently told my that I sound “like a bird, only in a good way.” Whatever that means.
I am definitely NOT dramatic or spinto, though. No Wagner in my future. (Thank God!) I wish I were a coloratura. They get such cool music!
Trivia about me:
Favorite composer? This week I’m stuck on Reynaldo Hahn.
Least favorite composer? That would have to be a three-way tie between Wagner, Schoenberg, and Ives. (My best friend would glare at me for saying that about Schoenberg.)
Favorite operas? Donizetti’s L’elisir d’Amore, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Le nozze di Figaro, Menotti’s The Telephone and The Old Maid and the Thief (although I’ve never seen Old Maid), Puccini’s Madama Butterfly
Favorite singers? Rolando Villazón! (I’m somewhat obsessed with him.) I love his baritone-ish tenor voice, his energy, and his stage presence. For sopranos, there’s Renee Fleming (the goddess herself!) and Anna Netrebko. In the baritone category I enjoy listening to Bryn Terfel. I once saw Lucas Meachem when I lived in Redding. He was quite good, as I recall. Susan Graham and Dawn Upshaw are a couple of great mezzos.
Least favorite famous singers? Pavarotti and Maria Callas. Both of their voices make me cringe.
